The Simien Mountains National Park
      includes one of the most dramatic mountain landscapes in Africa, and is home to some
      of the continent’s rarest fauna and flora, including the endemic Walia Ibex, Ethiopian
      Wolf and Gelada Baboon. The park covers the northern escarpment of an ancient
      mountain massif of igneous basalts, deeply cut by forested gorges and sheer cliffs, some
      1,500m high. The Park was one of the first four sites to be inscribed on the World
      Heritage List in 1978. The hike takes you to both the highland and lowland parts the
      national park including Sankaber – home of the gelada, Gich – the gateway for the
      astonishing vistas of Imet Gogo, Chennek – a spot for rare and endemic wildlife such as
      the Walia Ibex and Ethiopia’s highest mountain Ras Dashen (4,620m). The first 4 – 5
      days of trekking on the highland routes gives you a chance to see 3 of the of the “Unique
      7” mammal species of Ethiopia (Walia ibex, Ethiopian wolf and gelada) as well as an
      abundance of interesting flora and some of the world’s most majestic and colorful birds,
      including the lammergeyer (bearded vulture) also known as the “Lords of the Plateau.”
      Following the rewarding experience of the highland routes, the trip then takes you on a
      more off-the-beaten-track route to the lowland parts of the park through the villages of

The trip starts in Addis Ababa, the capital city of Ethiopia and center for
      the African continent. Then the flight takes you to Semera, and center to start a trip to
      explore the famous Denakil Depression aster the war in the tigray region. You will
      undertake a memorable trek to the top of the active volcano Erta Ale before discovering
      the alien salt landscapes of Dallol. The Danakil Depression lies between the Danakil
      Alps (east) and the Ethiopian Plateau (west), which were once joined until the rifting
      process tore them apart. The land surface is slowly sinking, and Danakil Depression will
      someday fill with water as a new ocean or great lake is born. But for now, the region is
      full of other interesting liquids.
      The Danakil Depression is one of the lowest areas below sea level and is also the hottest
      point on Earth as far as the year-round average temperatures are considered.Known by
      the Afar as the “smoking mountain” and “the gateway to hell,” Erta Ale is a
      2,011-foot-high constantly active basaltic shield volcano. It is one of only a handful of
      continuously active volcanos in the world, and a member of an even more exclusive
      group: volcanos with lava lakes. While there are only five known volcanos with lava
      lakes globally, Erta Ale often has two active lava lakes – making it a unique site. Erta Ale
      was discovered in 1906, making it the longest-known lava lake. Dallol has some of the
      most colorful landscapes on Earth. The hot magma below heats groundwater flowing in
      from the surrounding highlands. This hot water moves up toward the surface and
      through the evaporite deposits, dissolving salt, potash, and other soluble minerals.

      Mountains support the most extensive area of Afro alpine and sub alpine Ericaceous
      vegetation in Africa. They have the highest rate of animal endemicity of any terrestrial
      habitat in the world, which was the principal reason for the creation of the Bale

      The high altitude, afro-montane Sanetti Plateau rises to over 4,000m and includes the
      highest peak in the southern Ethiopia highlands. This undulating plateau is marked by
      numerous glacial lakes and swamps and surrounded by higher volcanic ridges and
      peaks. The southern slopes are covered by the lush and largely unexplored Harenna
      Forest. The place is known for its unimaginable and wholly unique natural beauty and
      wildlife. Thanks to the isolation of these mountains, the park has an incredibly high
      number of endemic species, and the wide altitudinal range has resulted in a variety of
      belts of vegetation that support many niche species of both flora and fauna. The open
      spaces of the high Sanetti Plateau are possibly the easiest place to see the rare Ethiopian
      wolf, while nearby Harenna Forest is the place to find bush pig, giant forest hog, grey
      duiker and occasionally lion and leopard. Menelik’s bushbuck, the endemic mountain
      Nyala and giant mole rat, all endemic to the Bale Mountains, can also be seen here. The
      park is a bird paradise with several endemic birds including the thick-billed raven,
      Wattled Ibis, blue-winged goose, and Rouget’s rail.
